What is asbestos?
Asbestos is the name given to a group of six naturally occurring fibrous silicate minerals that are resistant to heat and corrosion.
Before being banned in 1999, it was a popular building material – used for insulation, roofing, flooring, and more.
When left undisturbed, asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) pose minimal risk. However, if they are damaged in any way, their microscopic fibres can be released into the atmosphere and get trapped in the body.
Inhaling these harmful fibres can lead to life-threatening and irreversible damage to the respiratory system, including conditions such as mesothelioma, asbestosis, and lung cancer.
