Why was asbestos removal required?
We were recently contacted by EFT Construction, who were carrying out a full renovation of a school toilet block. As part of the project, they needed assistance safely removing flooring materials that were suspected to contain asbestos.
While asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) can be relatively harmless if left undisturbed, any removal, cutting, or refurbishment work poses a serious risk. Once disturbed, asbestos releases tiny fibres into the air that can lead to severe health issues, including asbestosis, mesothelioma, and lung cancer. This makes properly managed asbestos management in schools crucial.
Rather than tackling the flooring themselves, EFT Construction did the right thing and called in licensed professionals. Our team at DACT has the training, tools, and experience to manage asbestos safely and in line with all regulations.
What did DACT do?
The initial phase of the project involved removing the top layer of lino and adhesive. This was completed quickly and without issue, allowing us to move on to the more complex elements of the job.
Beneath the surface, we encountered several layers of screed that required specialist equipment to break down safely. Our team carefully dismantled these layers, double-bagged the resulting waste, and loaded everything onto our licensed asbestos transport vehicle for safe disposal.
The final layer to be addressed was a particularly tough bitumen adhesive. To remove it safely, we used our Blastrac machine paired with a Class H extraction system, which allowed for precise and dust-controlled removal.
Once all asbestos-containing materials had been cleared from the area and removed from site in line with asbestos regulations, we arranged a reassurance air test to ensure the space was safe for re-entry. The project was completed efficiently, enabling EFT Construction to carry on with the wider refurbishment works without any delays.
