The abandoned skip had been sitting on-site for a number of years. Over time, exposure to the weather had taken its toll. The container was worn, rusted, and visibly unstable. Inside, asbestos cement roofing sheets had been stacked without care, no protective wrapping, no polythene lining, and no secure packing.
Further investigation revealed the skip had originally been left by an asbestos removals firm that had since dissolved, leaving behind a dangerous legacy. What had once been simply forgotten waste was now a growing risk.
Had anyone attempted to move the skip without realising what it contained, the consequences could have been severe. The rusted floor was at risk of collapse, and any sudden disturbance could have released fibres into the air, putting workers and visitors in danger. Immediate action was essential.
After being contacted by the site’s groundskeeper, our team promptly attended to assess the situation. Confirming that asbestos was present, we arranged for a replacement skip to be delivered so that we could safely transfer the waste.
The work required patience and care. Each asbestos sheet was removed, wrapped, and bagged in line with regulations before being placed into the new, secure container. With more than five tonnes of asbestos involved, this was no small task.
The original skip had not been packed correctly, meaning materials had to be handled individually and prepared for safe disposal on site. Had we simply lifted the old skip onto a lorry, the corroded base could have given way in transit, a disaster waiting to happen. By managing the transfer properly, we removed that risk entirely.
Once the asbestos removal materials had been securely packed, the new skip was sealed and collected from the site shortly after, ensuring the asbestos could be transported to a licensed disposal facility.

As with all asbestos projects, safety was at the heart of everything we did. Our trained operatives wore full PPE, including respiratory protective equipment, and followed strict procedures for handling and packaging asbestos.
All waste was wrapped and sealed to prevent fibre release, while the work area was carefully managed to avoid unnecessary exposure to those working nearby. Because the skip was located in a busy industrial environment, we also took extra care to plan the job in a way that minimised disruption for those using the site.
By the end of the project, the abandoned skip, which was once a serious and growing problem, had been removed completely. In its place, the client had peace of mind, knowing that the asbestos was no longer a threat to staff, visitors, or the wider site.
This case is a reminder of the importance of managing asbestos correctly. Even years after being abandoned, it doesn’t simply disappear. Left unaddressed, it only becomes more dangerous over time.
